What is a hand grenade?
- A grenade is a small, hand held explosive, used during the war to kill fortified enemy units within their trenches. When thrown towards the enemy it was intented to create a destructive effect
Who first used hand grenades?
-Germany was ahead of the Allies in terms of preparation for the war and they produced many various types of grenades in 1913
-The U.s. was lagging behind coming into the war because they were missing the necessary weapons/devices
-France and Britain helped the U.s. and supplied them with weapons one of them being the hand grenade
Different types of hand grenades
-OFFensive Grenades: Could be used in the open and used a non-fragmenting body. have a nonmetallic container
-defensive fragmentation grenades: These type of grenades contained internal or external fragmentation grooves, mainly the most common grenade used. body made of hard plastic or steel
-Gas grenades: these grenades are designed to burn/release a gas, not explode. they were used when explosive grenades weren't effective
-Phosphorous grenades: a lethal grenade that releases white hot chemical (phosphorus) which will burn into the skin
